The famous Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral in Mexico City, which houses a treasured icon of the Virgin Mary, was severely damaged by a terrible earthquake in 2017. It is regarded as miraculous for surviving both earthquakes and floods. However, because the image cannot be removed from the adobe wall, its fate is inextricably linked to that of the church. After months of effort to stabilise the structure, phase two of a restoration project has already commenced. As the five-year anniversary of the Sept. 19 earthquake approaches, parishioners who continue to attend Mass on the street outside can rejoice in renewed efforts to rebuild the destroyed cathedral and protect the adored Virgin.
After reports of tears and the statue's hand position shifting, Catholics from throughout the country, including some politicians, have flocked to the site.
"I believe the Virgin has performed numerous miracles," stated local politician Candelaria Perez Jimenez.

"With what has transpired in Mexico - earthquakes, hurricanes, child fatalities - God is asking us to make us alert," says the Virgin.
